Annotation The article analyzes the state of the Orthodox Church in China in a transitional time for the state – the second half of the 1940s. At the same time, it is the period of the return of the Orthodox clergy and parishioners to the Moscow Patriarchate. The paper analyzes publications on the issue. It focuses on the fact that the available data, the majority of publications are given without references to archival sources, if they exist they are not considered as cases of the State archive of the Russian Federation. The author determined significance of the documents of the State archive of the Russian Federation for studying the history of Orthodoxy in China at the time studied. The main trends in the development of Orthodoxy in different regions of the country are characterized. Negative and positive aspects are identified. A conclusion about a significant decline of Orthodoxy is made. The author highlights the reasons for this, discusses the objective factors that influenced the Orthodoxy, such as the outflow of Orthodox parishioners in the Soviet Union and the subjective – internal contradictions. In the final remarks the author concludes about the necessity to recreate the most complete history of Orthodoxy in China, further serious work with archival documents, first of all, with the affairs of the State archive of the Russian Federation.
