Annotation The article deals with the repressive policies of the Soviet state against the supporters of one of the world’s oldest religions ‒ Buddhism (Lamaism) on the territory of Buryat Republic in the 1920s -1930s. Significant proportion of the Buryats, the Tuvinians, the Kalmyks and the Evenks in the region of Eastern Siberia professes Buddhism. In the early years of the Soviet power representatives of Lamaist clergy actively participated in the political life of the Buryat-Mongolian Republic, however, the new government relentless struggled with it. In the years of the Stalin regime, they experienced severe persecution. The Soviet power began active actions against Lamaism in the middle of the 1920s. These actions led to a sharp reduction in the number of lamas in the territory of Buryat-Mongolia. Closing and liquidation of datsans were accompanied by their barbaric destruction, annihilation of property and the desecration of the feelings of believers. The Tibetan medicine as the traditional activities of lamas was also subjected to repression.Documents give us the evidence that representatives of the traditional Buddhist religion, which existed for centuries among the Buryat population and was part of popular culture and everyday life were identified as the “class enemies”.
