Annotation The paper presents the results of studying an unresearched aspect of intertext (genre and individual specificity in implementing intertext category) in the works of a famous American science fiction writer Frank Herbert. The study of intertext is a topical problem of modern textology and discourse theory. The article presents a brief overview of intertext theories, shows the dynamics of scientific discussion in the area of intertext studies. To study the peculiarities of intertext generic characteristics in the works by Herbert, the research uses a combination of methods and approaches, which provides a complete and thorough examination of the researched material. The article proposes methodology for intertext research based on cognitive theory and hermeneutics. The study revealed specific features of implementing intertext in the literary works of the “Dune” series. First of all, these are the ways of organizing intertextual connections: the writer chooses such types of connection, which are not limited to mono-semantic interpretation and which are hidden in the text requiring a good knowledge of historical sources, as well as modern ones. In addition to direct intertext functions, such tools play an important role in structuring text, characterizing the heroes and providing re-evaluation. The peculiarities of Herbert’s literary works is also revealed in the choice of allusions, composition and pseudo-intertext. Intertext tools are included into the system of literary content; they are closely connected with the themes, symbolism and ideology of Herbert’s literary works. The study also revealed styling as the tool of creating intertextual connections, which performs an important generic task: to convince the reader in the realistic nature of the fantastic content in Herbart’s novels. The study of intertext tools also made it possible to disclose the interconnection of this category with the author’s individual style. The article suggests that the implementation of intertext in the literary works of Herbert is determined by genre and stylistic specificity; the paper outlines further prospects for researching intertext in other science fiction texts.
