Annotation The article is devoted to the study of the disposition of social and political forces in the city of Irkutsk at the initial stage of the development of the revolution in 1917. For several centuries the city of Irkutsk was the military-administrative center of Eastern Siberia, it concentrated in itself a significant number of employees of state authorities, military structures, industrial groups of the population, constantly replenished with various categories of migrants, including political exiles, which led to the heterogeneity of its population and socio-political specifics. It is shown that in the city of Irkutsk, one of the largest cities of Siberia, there were representatives of Russian socialist as well as liberal parties that activated their activities on the background of events taking place in the country. Studying the history “from below” made it possible to find out how the life of ordinary people was shaped, what was the connection between them and the authorities, what forms of social existence existed, etc. An analysis of the political situation in Irkutsk in the initial period of the revolutionary upheavals of 1917 was undertaken as an objective prerequisite for the subsequent transformation of mental forms of consciousness, attitudes and habits, as well as the material and domestic sphere that influenced the daily life of the urban population. It is shown that the political environment was formed spontaneously, under the influence of the revolutionary events in the country, regardless of the opinion of most people. The political vicissitudes in the early stage of the revolutionary process of 1917 did not concern the broad masses of the city’s population, who were more eager not to participate in the political struggle, but to overcome the social and economic difficulties caused by the socio-political situation in the country.
Key words socio-political situation, socio-political organizations, political parties, revolution, Eastern Siberia, Irkutsk, daily life of the population
