Annotation This article aims to study the peculiarities of ethnic socialization, the establishment of ethnic identity and the formation of the younger generation’s ethnic tolerance in the changing conditions in Russia and in the world. The importance of this research is conditioned by the increase of ethnic tensions, the spread of various forms of xenophobia, as well as the need for analysis, comparison and classification of psychological factors that provide constructive types of inter-ethnic interaction in modern society. Ethnic socialization is represented as man’s assimilation of ethnic and cultural experience in education and life. The author considers the main stages of ethnic identity formation as a notion of belonging to a particular ethnic community. Ethnic tolerance emerges as a result of successful ethnic socialization and implicates the adoption of ethnic and cultural differences. It originates, develops, and forms on the basis of a positive ethnic identity. The paper discusses the results of an empirical study of the ethnic identity and ethnic tolerance level, the system of value orientations and the degree of social distance of secondary school pupils in Chita. It reveals the transformation of ethnic identity of the younger generation according to the type of hyper-identity, selectivity in inter-ethnic relations, a large social distance towards other ethnic groups and certain wariness to them. The article emphasizes the necessity to form respectful and friendly attitudes of the younger generation to the representatives of all nationalities, to develop ethnic and cultural literacy, to form ethnic and cultural competence. The results of the study will be used to develop a program of ethno-cultural training and cultural assimilators in relation to the specifics of the region, as well as in the educational process of the university in the form of new courses, programs and the content of practices.
