Annotation	The article deals with the history and culture of Zabaikalye, teaching ancient languages in the Chita boys’ gymnasium. It considers the value of classical education, emphasizes the role and the level of the gymnasium staff qualifications in order to achieve sufficiently good results in teaching classical languages and ancient culture. The author stresses the importance of the values formed by Greco-Roman culture, draws attention to the importance of studying ancient culture and ancient languages in the process of forming a harmoniously developed personality.
