Annotation The paper considers the phenomenon of post-truth not only as an important part of contemporary political reality but mainly as a pervasive feature of overall social life since the time of antiquity including the field of philosophy. It offers a critical analysis of the original conception of Steven Fuller, in which post-truth gets a positive treatment and is interpreted as a refusal to recognize the traditional forms of creation and legitimation of knowledge and pay the rent to the officially qualified professionals. The paper also analyzes negative consequences of such democratization of knowledge, which are an overabundance of local narratives and “alternative facts”. Special attention is paid to the struggle for modal power, which here means the fight of various truth-producers at a meta-level for defining the rules of the game, for establishing which truths will have a priority in this competitive struggle. The author offers a general overview of the contemporary “post-truth condition” and shows the possibility of its positive evolution. This would require a shift of focus from competing truths to the procedures of understanding and problem-solving, as it is now happening in contemporary epistemology and philosophy of science.
Key words truth, post-truth, modal power, populism, democratization, S. Fuller
