Annotation In the Russian research literature, there is a variety of methodological approaches to studying of Contemporary Dance. However, only a small number of authors base their conclusions on foreign experience and practice of Contemporary Dance. Difficulties of the research of modern dance (Contemporary Dance) are also caused by the fact that in Russia the theory of contemporary dance and the system of methods of its research are in the beginning of formation. The traditional methods developed in the science of ballet and history of classical dance considering, first of all, questions of an art form, its principals and properties, elements and structures, features of language and symbolical value do not give adequate understanding of the nature of contemporary dance. For this reason, we need consideration of this question at qualitatively new philosophical and culturological level which assumes generalization of intrinsic characteristics and signs of this phenomenon of modern culture. The article examines specific character of perception of contemporary dance in Russia. The analysis carried out allowed us to reveal two main methodological schools in studying modern dance in Russia: theoretical-culturological and choreographic. Whereas the former is indirectly related to the practice of contemporary dance (Contemporary Dance is an object of studying in relation to which a researcher acts only as external observer), the second methodological school is presented by researchers-choreographers who are experienced in contemporary dance, recognizing dependency and root of modern dance from Europe and America (such researchers are engaged in studying modern dance from within, completely plunging into the object of studying).
Key words contemporary dance, physicality, philosophy of dance, theory of dance, immersion method
