Annotation	This article attempts to examine herding among contemporary Altai People not only as a traditional branch of economy, but also as an important part of image of the world. Socio-economic transformation in Russia gave rise to a variety of adaptation strategies. Based on years of research, author concludes, that fluctuations in the number of livestock in the private backyard can be used as an indicator of adaptation of the rural population to the changing socio-economic situation.
