Annotation The research of the specific features of Latin American culture and its reflection in philosophy is connected with the eventful sociopolitical life of the continent, its literature and historiography. Whereas in the 1920s and 30s many asked a question of whether Latin American philosophy existed, in the 1940s-50s the question was rejected by the reviews of its philosophy in different countries of Latin America. However, the quest of the identity and original essence of this philosophy was connected not only with the rejection of Eurocentrism, but also with the development of the original Latin American philosophy. This process was dramatically influenced by Leopoldo Zea and his followers, whose development had a number of stages. At the beginning, the thinker investigated the evolution of historical, philosophical and social thought of Mexico and the continent. In the 1980s and 1990s, Zea considered the situation in the region as a meeting of cultures and dialogical understanding of the historical and cultural process. The search of an authentic way of the development of the continent philosophy and the struggle for a worthy place in the world history of thought led to Zea’s philosophy of liberation. Its originality is seen in a basic openness to communications with other philosophical discourses and “enculturation of philosophy”, as any philosophical discourse is to be rooted by its sources, social and cultural conditionality.
Key words Latin American philosophy, identity, José Ortega y Gasset, Salazar Bondi, Leopoldo Zea, Enrique Dussel, philosophy of liberation
