| Annotation | The article explores the evolution of the monarch’s image tradition in the Russian memoir literature of the18th century. The object of analysis in the article are the autodocumentary texts by I. Neplyuev, V. Nashchokin, Ya. Shakhovsky, G. Derzhavin, A. Bolotov, V. Golovina. The author proves that it was the memoir literature being the literature “alternative” to the main body of literary texts which possessed great possibilities for representation of the monarch in the traditions of private honest life, outside the context of typical for the literature of the Enlightenment odeo-satirical world view and state cultural mythology. The purpose of the article is to trace the change in the principles of the image of monarchs, depending on the influence on the author of the dominant literary and aesthetic trends of the 18th century and the memoir truth of the fact, which is the most important genre-forming feature of ego documents. The process of analyzing memoir sources shows how the search of the ideal monarch by various authors using the experience of “eyewitness” of events forces them to abandon the traditional literary cliches of the classical era in depicting the powerful. This is particularly evident in the notes of Ya. Shakhovsky, G. Derzhavin and A. Bolotov, who essentially destroyed the classic state myth. At the same time it was easier for women-memoirists like Countess V. Golovina to model the sentimental ideal of a ruler, which is proved by the image of Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich and his wife in the image of Cupid and Psyche. The analysis conducted contributes to better understanding of the principles of representation of the person in the Russian literature of the 18th century, preparing the tradition of its romantic modeling in the first third of the 19th century. |
