Annotation The article deals with peculiarities of the legal status of the tribal aristocracy and Buddhist clergy in the colleThe article deals with peculiarities of the legal status of the tribal aristocracy and Buddhist clergy in the collections of customary law of Buryat people of the second half of the 18th – 19th centuries. Compiling collections of “steppe laws”, the tribal aristocracy actively adapted customary law in their interests, thereby securing their privileged position in society. From the second half of the 18th century, Buddhist clergy have been actively involved in the compilation of collections of customary law. Compiling answers to the requests of Russian Government, the Buryat tribal aristocracy and Buddhist clergy adapted traditional norms and customs with the aim of asserting their high legal position in society, and sought to vest themselves with broad powers. The study of monuments of customary law indicates the active integration of the clergy into the political life of society. As a result, the collections of customary law of Buryat people of the second half of the 18th – 19th centuries documented the broad powers of the tribal aristocracy and Buddhist clergy. The author used comparative typological and historical diachronous research methods. This article is of interest to a wide range of readers.
