Annotation | The relevance of the study of interethnic relations in the Xinjiang-Uyghur Autonomous Region (hereinafter referred to as XUAR) of the PRC is conditioned by the existence of a long-standing interethnic conflict between representatives of the Han and Uygur ethnoses. This article looks at both external and internal causes that trigger the escalation of the conflict. Historically established and emerging contradictions between Han Chinese and Uigurs have been revealed, leading to their detonation in the form of open, sometimes armed clashes, the largest of which occurred in July 2009 in Urumchi (as a result of the conflict, some 200 people died and several hundred were wounded). In view of the aggravation of this conflict, it becomes necessary to carry out an analysis of both objective and subjective aspects of the “Uygur problem”. At the same time, it is noted that the complexity of the settlement of this conflict is more determined by reasons of a subjective nature. The resolution of the objective side of the Uygur-Han conflict does not guarantee its exhaustion. Therefore, special consideration is given to the consideration of the subjective factor in the formation of an effective conflict management model capable of stabilizing the region in the long term, thus guaranteeing the security of China and its neighboring states. |
