| Annotation | Nowadays, the study of the history of military conflicts is a significant topic for historical research. The study of A. N. Pepelyaev’s campaign in Yakutia within the Marxist–Leninist framework has been the basis for historical work on the issue for many years. The integration of new methods of historical knowledge in the context of an “anthropological” turn in the humanities at the end of the twentieth century has had a significant influence on the development of historical writing. The aim of this research is to examine the historiography on the Yakut expedition of the Siberian Volunteers in 1922–1923 and its logic using new methodological techniques, including intellectual history. We particularly focus on the legacy of Russian historical thought, which helps to better understand the origins and evolution of ideas about the Yakutsk campaign from its first mentions to contemporary interpretations. Critical analysis of sources and historical traditions contributes to a more objective understanding of the significance of the Siberian Volunteer Squad’s role in the civil war as a social phenomenon and enhances historical comprehension of local and international events. This study reveals that Soviet writings on the history of the Pepelyaev’s expedition (1918–1930) were fragmented and methodically biased towards a class-based approach. During that period, many records were classified, making it difficult to investigate issues such as funding, biographies, and interactions between white officers and local populations. Scientific perspectives on the expedition have evolved with societal shifts. In the 1990s, new sources emerged and a shift away from traditional attitudes and frameworks began in Russian historiography. Today, contemporary historians employ innovative research methods such as new local history, intellectual history, global history, and military anthropology to explore this topic. |
