Annotation Historical memory in its current functioning as media memory is a social organism and a mechanism for producing and disseminating information about the past. Past values are actualized in public consciousness under the influence of the sociopolitical situation, which impacts historical memory in the “second reality”. The goal of this study is to develop relevant models for the formation of media memory in the digital environment. Accordingly, the empirical base (materials) and research methods were selected: comparative and content analysis, identifying the intentions (semantic zones) of the analyzed texts. Historical memory is typically interpreted as a special construct. For our study, a different approach was chosen, in which the condition of “constructivity” is not decisive, because in the digital age the functioning of historical memory in a media environment is more significant, where the semantic and organizing principle lies within all subjects ‒ actors and their audiences. The object of this study is the journalism of a scientist and writer as exponents of the sentiments of certain strata of society. In this case, these are articles by Hermitage Director and Academician Mikhail Piotrovsky and writer Zakhar Prilepin. The conducted analysis allowed us to identify examples of analog media that are still successfully saturating the space of the “second reality”. The analysis is limited to the timeframe of the Special Military Operation, beginning from February 2022. Based on the content analysis of the academician’s publications, markers of the influence of the current political situation on the intentions of historical memory are identified. The latter is seen as a component of Mikhail Piotrovsky’s professional view of culture as the director of a world-class museum. A study of the contrasting practices of digital media in the writing of public figure and blogger Zakhar Prilepin also aims to identify the markers. His speeches initiate comments and discussions in the audience, the presence of which indicates the genesis of discursive practices in the digital world. Based on the analysis, models of the genesis of media memory in society are constructed. The first represents a transitional practice of mass media from the analog to the digital era, while the second demonstrates the peculiarities of discourse formation involving the “dispersed” audience of an actor of historical memory. We also highlight the principle of the continuous renewal of the “second reality” in its interaction with the cultural content of media memory: journalists’ practices in updating historical memory dispel the stereotypical notion of its artificiality. This research could logically be expanded upon by analyzing the levels/factors and forms of media audience activity in updating historical memory, as well as its dynamics, from its inception to its decline.
