Annotation The work under review is the English-language version of I. I. Razgildeeva’s monograph “Spatial Analysis of Housing and Economic Complexes in the Upper Palaeolithic of Transbaikal (Southern Siberia)”, published by Transbaikal State University in 2018. It represents not only an encyclopedic overview of the problems and achievements of Russian archaeology in the study of Paleolithic housing complexes from the late 19th century to the present but also an objective and accurate analysis of the research findings of Transbaikal archaeologists examining all housing structures in the region. It exemplifies the successful use of cutting-edge methods for studying uniquely complex sites, demonstrated by the author using the multi-layered settlement of Studenoe 2 as an example. A detailed description of the housing structures, as evident in the structure of the cultural layer, is provided. Since the text is accompanied by diagrams, drawings, and charts, the reader is able not only to evaluate the author’s arguments and observations but also to draw their own conclusions. The determination of the nature of human activity inside the dwelling (processing of hide, leather, wood, and bone with specific stone tools) is based on the results of trace analysis, making the author’s conclusions completely reliable. Thus, using archaeological and natural science materials, the author provides a comprehensive characterization of the structural features of Late Paleolithic dwellings in Transbaikalia, which existed under specific paleoclimatic and paleolandscape conditions; the exterior and interior appearance of the dwellings is reconstructed; and the activities of the dwellers are recreated down to the level of specific labor operations. Publication of this book by the international publishing house Archaeopress allows foreign colleagues to directly familiarize themselves with the results of Russian research on the Siberian Paleolithic and represents a significant achievement in Transbaikal archaeology.
