Annotation The article deals with the involvement of Polish political exiles in the development of hotel business in Eastern Transbaikal region. The participation of Polish exiles in the economic life of the Eastern Transbaikalia has not been reflected in an independent research; thereby this topic seems to be significant for us. Based on a wide range of historical sources, the author illustrates the activities of Polish exiles in the major cities of the Transbaikal region regarding the maintenance of inns and hotels. The author analyzed diaries and memoirs of Polish exiles and foreign travelers who stayed in the hotels that were run by the Poles. The hotel business in Transbaikalia in the 19th century was at a low level of development. Lack of objective conditions for the formation of the hotel sphere led to the fact that this sphere of the economy did not receive its development in the second half of the 19th century. After Polish political exiles had been permitted to live in settlements in the 1870–1880s, they searched for ways to earn money. Thus, some of the Polish exiles were engaged in the maintenance of hotels and inns. The Polish exiles made a definite contribution to the development of the hotel business in Transbaikalia by introducing some elements inherent in the western regions of the Russian Empire.
Key words Polish political exiles, Eastern Transbaikalia, hotel business, economic activity, hotels, inns
