Annotation Modern requirements for the educational process provide conditions for the multifaceted development and socialization of the younger generation, which should be implemented in the framework of extracurricular activities. This fact determined the relevance of the appeal to the historical experience of the formation and functioning of the system of out-of-school education of schoolchildren in Chita in the late 1930s ‒ early 1940s. The prewar years were a very important stage for the development of various forms of extracurricular activities in our country, which determined the changes in the content of the educational process. Sources for the study were party and government documents and office materials published, taken from the funds of the State archives of Zabaikalsky krai, which were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The methodological basis of the work was a complex of general scientific and special methods, as well as the principles of historical science, an important place among which were the principles of historicism and objectivity. This article uses micro-historical approach, allowing to track the general trends of the prewar system of out-of-school education on the basis of a separately taken region. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of the organization of group work and the formation of various out-of-school institutions of Chita (the Palace of pioneers, Station of young naturalists, Station of young technicians, etc.). The work reflects the mechanisms of implementation of the tasks facing educational institutions and out-of-school institutions for the organization of extracurricular activities and enshrined in the normative documents of the time. It is noted that due to the remoteness of Chita from the center of their decision objectively went slower. However, despite the shortcomings, the efforts of the city Department of public education, school authorities, teachers and employees of out-of-school institutions of the city gradually contributed to bringing the system of out-of-school and extracurricular activities in line with the existing regulatory requirements.
