Annotation The article is devoted to Vasiliy Pavlovich Vasilyev, one of the outstanding polymaths who stood at the origins of the school of Oriental studies. Like his generation of Oriental scholars, he studied a wide range of issues concerning the language, history, culture, ethnography, and religion of Eastern peoples. 2018 is an anniversary year not only for the scientist (200th anniversary), but also for the school of Oriental studies in Russia. In 1818, the Asian Museum was established in St. Petersburg, which became a treasure trove of the Oriental cultural heritage. Vasiliy Pavlovich is more known as a sinologist, but he began his scientific work in the field of Mongolian studies and it was not accidental. The founder of scientific Mongolian Studies O. M. Kovalevsky was his teacher for many years, under his leadership V. P. Vasilyev learned the Mongolian language, translated sources from the Chinese, Manchu and then they formed the basis of his first works on Buddhism. The publication reflects the historical views of V. P. Vasilyev, his attitude towards the Eastern peoples, in the confirmation of which we have quoted the excerpts from the scientist’s little-known works, interesting facts on the history of the Mongols from his diaries. The analysis of the material proves the continuity of traditions of Mongol Studies in Russia and allows us to outline the range of basic trends for their further development.
Key words Mongolian Studies, Mongols, Buddhism, V. P. Vasilyev, O. M. Kovalevsky
