Annotation | In an article written on the basis of generalization of historical documents not previously entered into the scientific circulation from the fund of the state archives of the Trans-Baikal Territory, a brief biographical sketch is presented about the fate of the priest-revolutionary Yakov Ivanovich Znamensky, who served as a parish rector of Nerchinsk Assumption Church from May 10, 1910 to January 28, 1923 and at the same time performed the duties of the Dean III of the Deanery of Trans-Baikal Eparchy. Yakov Znamensky showed himself as a man not ordinary in every respect, he was endowed with a natural mind, courage, crystal honesty and devotion to his parishioners who spoke of him: “the priest is not like others, he will not go against the people, we are for the revolution and he is with us”. Yakov sincerely believed in the postulates proclaimed by the Bolsheviks who, in his opinion, were consonant with the basic dogmas of the Christian dogma. The fate of Yakov Znamensky is tragically symbolic; it makes a new look at the attitude of the parish clergy to the October Socialist Revolution and serves as a vivid example of the actions of priest-revolutionaries, whose hard fate has not been reflected in the studies of both secular and spiritual historians yet. The lack of any information on the issue raised made it necessary to continue further archival research on the representations of the orthodox clergy of the Trans-Baikal Region, who took an active part in the revolutionary transformations of Russian society. |
