Annotation	The article focuses on the interaction of temporal and personal deixis in A. and B. Strugatsky’s Roadside Picnic. The material of the original is analyzed in comparison with the English translations, which serve as a background for highlighting the key features in the original text. Since the story is popular both in Russia and abroad and has been published in more than twenty countries, a comparative study of its original and translations seems to be in demand. In addition, this text has not been analyzed in regard to deictic categories yet, although plenty of works on this science fiction phenomenon have been written in the literary criticism. In our study, the material of the first chapter is analyzed in detail. We found that in the earlier translation by A. Bouis, the past tense is predominant, and the present is preserved in a limited number of reader-oriented contexts. The purpose of the study was to find out in which types of contexts the use of the present time is due to the dialogic nature of the narrative and the activation of the second person’s deixis. The results of the research may be of interest not only to the researchers of Strugatsky’s ouvre, but also to linguists who analyze deixis on the material of fiction in connection with the point of view, subjective perspective, communicative registers.
