Annotation One of the important sources on the history of Buddhism are biographies of Buddhist monks – namtars. Along with description of legendary events, they contain valuable information about the life of church hierarchs, the state of religion and society, descriptions of monasteries, spiritual practices, etc. In the present article, the biography of a great Buddhist scholar Chakhar-gebshi Lubsantsultim (1740–1810) is analyzed. The biography was printed in Tsagan ul monastery’s printing house in 1818. The author of “Chakhar-gebshi’s biography” is a Buddhist monk Lubsansamdubnima. This source written shortly after Chakhar-gebshi’s death by his closest pupil contains detailed biographical facts, as well as a wealth of material on the socio-cultural life of the region. The namtar contains little-known facts on the history of Inner Mongolian Buddhism. The synopsis of seven chapters of the biography in which the life priorities of Chakhar-gebshi, his education in famous monasteries of Dolonnor and Yunkhegun, activities for distribution of Buddhist doctrine is given. Widely used biographic, historical and comparative methods allowed us to reveal Chakhar-gebshi’s identity, relationship with the monastic environment, the impact of Buddhist ideas on the outlook of secular population, formation of local features of Buddhism, etc.
