| Annotation | The beginning of WWII, which is the main event of the 20th century, has been topical for scholars in the field of history for several decades. It is especially interesting for those scientists whose countries took an active part in it. Facing its anniversaries (in 2015, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII and in 2016, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War) and dealing with the Ukrainian crisis, the events of 1939–1941 and their interpretation are especially important today. The paper describes the development of Polish historiography of the background and the beginning of WWII. The stages in the study of the genesis of the War by Polish historians are singled out. The key issues of the Polish history of war are revealed, among them: justification of the Polish policy in international political crisis in 1939; the questions of territorial partition for Poland which was the disaster; the alternatives Polish diplomats had. A conclusion is made that contemporary Polish historiography of the beginning of WWII has national features, while the sources of such historiographical tradition were set by the Polish historians-emigrants. The events of 1939–1941 are still very important for Poland, which is proved by the attempts of historical memory formation and by the contemporary historical policy. |
