Annotation Although the facts of the history of the Wars of the Roses have been studied in detail, their social nature is still the subject of debate. The participation of representatives of various social strata in the conflict, with the exception of the nobility has not been enough studied. In the article, the social composition of the participants of the battle of St. Albans on February 17, 1461 is considered by the method of prosopography. For the given purpose, a wide range of sources is used, there are primarily historical narratives (“An English Chronicle” by J. Davis, “Annales rerum anglicanum” by William Worcester, Registrum abbatiae Johannis Whethamstede, Gregory’s Chronicle, Brief Latin Chronicle, John Hardyng’s Chronicle, Fabyan’s New Chronicles) as well as Rotuli Parliamentorum and documents of the Chancellery and the Treasury. The names of 42 participants of the battle were revealed in the end. They can be divided into three groups. Loyal supporters of Lancaster and York fought for them until the death or the suppression of the dynasty was the largest group. The second group was those who only once supported the “party” or resigned to its defeat. The smaller group consists of nobles and gentry sided with the enemy. Two common motives for participation were related / matrimonial and vassal ties.
Key words the Wars of the Roses, second battle of St. Albans, Lancaster and York, social structure of the participants
