| Annotation | The article is devoted to the analysis of the specificity of the problem of the Cossacks’ essence in Russian science. The framework of the intrinsic approach doesn’t allow solving the problem of the Cossacks’ origin due to the fact that a variety of ethnic and class characteristics of different groups of Cossacks as well as the processes of their fast variability do not give a chance to draw any verified conclusions. However, the conducted analysis shows that the scientists have managed to publish a large number of works in which they carry out substantive developments of the problems of the Cossacks ethnic or class origin, presented by autochthonic, migratory and synthetic concepts. The author proves that these concepts cannot offer verified versions concerning communication and continuity between modern Cossacks and those, who are considered their direct historical predecessors, and most often act as spokesmen of someone’s interests. In the conditions of modern processes of arranging the Cossacks in isolation from historical ethnic roots and traditions, substantive theories take a form of mythologemes and are used as justifications of these or those social and political actions, for the sake of integration, or mass population disintegrations represented by the Cossacks. It is important to consider that until now in domestic scientific literature of intrinsic contents, the questions of Cossacks’ identity have been discussed without the structural and constructive concepts, paying attention to the development of group consciousness and placing the emphasis on studying historical deposits of objective knowledge such as knowledge-representation and social myths about the historical past and community genesis. |
