Annotation The rare book stock of the Kyakhta museum of local lore is a collection of more than 30 thousand books. Among them there are remarkable samples of the Russian and foreign scientific editions of the 18th- 19th centuries. The article reviews some books from this book stock, containing the most interesting descriptions, reports on impressions about Kyakhta, its trade and a way of life of its inhabitants given by travelers on their way to China or Mongolia, or by researchers who studied Eastern Siberia and Transbaikal region in the 18th-20th centuries. They allow tracing the history of Kyakhta and its role in the history of Russia. This evidence characte rizes Kyakhta from different sides and gives a full picture of its development – from a small trade outpost to the one of the rich and famous cities in the world of the 18th- 19th centuries, tells about the reasons of its decline and oblivion.
