Annotation The article analyzes the changes in Mongolian Buddhism that occurred after the beginning of the democratic transformation of the state and public spheres of life in Mongolia. Some new laws and decrees regulating the relations between the state and religious organizations were considered, the authors traced the changes in other traditional religions, namely Islam and shamanism, the emergence and spread of new for Mongolia religions and religious movements. The process of restoration and renewal of Buddhist Church as a social institution, and the main challenges of the modern period of its formation are shown in details. Buddhism has become one of the main factors of consolidation of various social groups of the Mongolian society and of the formation of national consciousness, which resulted in a pan-Mongol movement for the revival of the Buddhist traditions. In connection with what the interest of all layers of the Mongolian society to Buddhism has significantly increased, as well as the public prestige of religions and religious organizations and activities of all confessions in general. It was revealed that as a result of the transformation of society the religious factor has gone beyond the religious sphere and became a significant component of the ethno-cultural identification of different ethnic groups of Mongolian population. The special value of this article lies in its sources. The article is written on the basis of sociological surveys conducted by Mongolian scientists.
