Annotation The article discusses the process of establishing the educational space of Buryatia in the context of civilization development of the region during the period from the 13th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This period is characterized by diverse forms of education due to intensive civilization processes in the region. The author emphasizes the role of religions in the creation of cultural and educational environment, in particular, the missionary activity of the Orthodox and Catholic churches, as well as educational activities of Buddhist temples, and their contribution to the development of the socio-cultural space of the region. The paper notes the importance of private education in the preparation of the first literate people and professionals from among the Buryat people. The analysis of the characteristics of the educational space of Buryatia of the period under study allows the author to conclude that the initiative of the Buryat families largely contributed to the opening of educational institutions in the region, as well as educating the most capable young members of the Buryat ethnic group that later made up the first Buryat intellectuals. The author considers that the peculiarities of the educational space in Buryatia of the period under review, largely determine the trends of further education development of the region in the near future.
