Annotation An outstanding scholar, ethnographer, teacher Matvei Nikolaevich Hangalov who lived at the edge of the XIX–XX centuries made great contribution to the development of ethnographic science of the Siberian region, education of the Buryat people. Scholarly cooperation with the East Siberian Branch of the Russian Geographic Society, namely with G. N. Potanin, D. A. Klements, N. N. Agapitov was fruitful, such cooperation was carried out mainly by means of correspondence. This cooperation was mutually advantageous as M. N. Hangalov was himself an ethnic Buryat knowing perfectly from inside the Buryat every day life and culture, their language. His works represent the wealth of various materials on folklore, ethnography of the Buryat people. Hangalov’s main scholarly merit consists in the fact that he has preserved for the future rich spiritual heritage of the Buryats, the best monuments of their culture.
