Annotation By examining the role of theaters and cinemas in daily life of the Yenissei province townspeople, the paper aims to analytically reconstruct their leisure activities in the early 1920s. During the period, one of the decisive factors in fundamental changes of socio-political relations was formation of a new Soviet sociocultural space and everyday practices of people, including leisure ones, fell into the sphere of dedicated state regulations. The sources the author has relied upon are primarily Siberian newspaper publications (Krasnoyarsky Rabochyi, published during the period 1920–25), previously unused, and legal sources of that time. Given the lack of the materials of personal origin, textual evidence of local periodicals should be considered as one of the important sources of information on everyday, including leisure, practices of townspeople. Although history of early Soviet society has been at the core of attention recently, the findings of the paper seek to contribute to a more complete understanding of the processes at work from the regional perspective of Siberia and analyze some features of cultural leisure practices at the grassroots level of Soviet society. This is what determined the choice of the territorial and chronological framework of the paper and, in turn, determined its relevance and novelty. The author has applied interdisciplinary, systemic, sociocultural approaches and analysis of historical sources on leisure.
Key words leisure practices, townspeople, Yenissei province, early 1920s, drama theater, cinema
