Annotation The article considers the role of associations of artistic intellectuals in the dialogue between power and society in the second half of the 19th century on the basis of a wide range of sources and studies. The development of society is the result of the development of culture. Culture captures, encodes a certain historical experience. The diversity of cultures engenders their dialogue. A heterogeneous society should single out for itself a national and official culture, as a result of which alternative (sometimes borderline) forms of everything that is happening are formed. The Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions became one of such associations in the history of Russia in the 19th century. In the scientific community, the activities of the Society were considered from the point of view of the history of art, while historians have not paid due attention to this issue yet. At the same time, the study of the activities of the Peredvizhniki artists in the perspective of everyday history will allow us to consider the era from the point of view of the anthropological approach, the specificity of which lies in the focus of research on holistic knowledge of a person in the context of a particular culture. The methodological basis of the work is also the theory of modernization and frontier development. The Society carried out activities on the border of the interests of the authorities and the people, successfully tacking between them. The exhibitions of the Society became a reflection of the state of national consciousness, of everyday life, which sometimes worried the authorities. Representatives of the imperial family showed considerable interest in the work of the Peredvizhniki, which does not confirm the widespread thesis about the opposition of the association. Skillfully maneuvering at this border, the Society was able to exist from 1870 to 1923, raising and displaying the most complex questions of reality.
Key words the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions, peredvizhniki, power, society, dialogue of cultures
