Annotation | The article analyzes the processes connected with lexicographical registration of newly-coined words in Amharic. The traditional way of fixing neologisms is to list them in explanatory dictionaries. Neological dictionaries help to actualize the use of linguistic innovations. Terminological dictionaries perform informational, systematizing and educational functions. At the same time, the very fact of lexicographical registration does not give grounds for predictions whether these linguistic innovations “will survive” in the language or not. The role of dictionaries significantly increases when a large number of newly-coined terms are being added to the language, as it was in Ethiopia in the 1980s. The research methods for the study are lexico-semantic and lexicographic, as well as a comparative analysis of the material selected by a continuous sample from lexicographic sources, scientific and journalistic texts. Based on the results of the study, we conclude that there is a lack of terminology unification in Amharic dictionaries. We also give the examples of optimal dictionary entries preparation. The issues of lexical units functioning and the correspondence between words in different languages are not only relevant for theoretical research but also have great practical importance, in particular for teaching native and foreign languages, translation, etc. |
