Annotation The article considers the important aspect from the point of view of the reconstruction of the most complete history of the Orthodox Church in Siberia – the quantitative composition of the Orthodox churches in Irkutsk, their name and canonical affiliation in one of the most difficult periods of Orthodox history, the middle of the 1920s, i. e. the time of the original result of the initial stage of the implementation of the antireligious policy of power. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism and objectivity, based on the formative approach. The scientific and popular studies available at present do not give a clear and definite answer to the question of the number, names and canonical affiliation of all Orthodox cathedrals, churches and prayer houses of Irkutsk throughout the Soviet period. At the beginning of the 1920s, the number and canonical affiliation of the Orthodox churches of Irkutsk were constantly changing, which was predetermined by the development of renewal. Based on the documents of the State Archive of the Russian Federation (SARF), the author gives the full list of Orthodox churches of Irkutsk, relating to both updated direction and to “early church”, i. e. supporters of Patriarch Tikhon (canonical community). The work on the problem poses other questions to the researcher, which are not directly related to the history of Orthodoxy, but they also require clarification. According to archival data, we can talk about the exact number, names and canonical belonging of Orthodox churches in the time under consideration, but there is no certainty in this matter about other chronological segments, which determines further work with archival documents, mainly from the funds of the State Archive of the Russian Federation.
Key words Orthodoxy, renewal, churches, parishioners, communities, Irkutsk
