The research presented in the article focuses on the phenomenon of changing realia in translated media texts and literary texts. Changing or even substituting realia was rather common in medieval translations, but in modern translation it is concerned by specialists in translation studies to be a marginal and inappropriate device. Though, as our research shows, it can be discovered not only in translated poems and prose, but also in translated mass media resources. Several different functions of this phenomenon are revealed and described in the article concerning the pragmatic sphere of translation. These functions are characterized as domesticating, evaluation-identifying, ideologically manipulative and foreignizing functions. Each type of substitution can be mostly found in certain genres of texts, it is also accompanied by linguistic (semantic and grammar) and compositional devices, supporting the same function within the whole translated text or its fragment. These devices are also characterized in the article. The material of this comparative research includes translations of classical Russian literature, adventure children literature (for example, both popular and non-famous Russian translations of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”), as well as modern authorized translations of media texts (articles from National Geographic magazine). |
