Annotation | The Chikoy archaeological expedition of Transbaikal State University conducts systematic field studies in the Trans-Baikal Territory, the Republic of Buryatia and Mongolia. Their goal is to search and excavate ancient monuments. Of particular value are multi-layered settlements. The settlements of Ust-Mensa-2 have been studied since 1980. Thirty-one cultural layers have been identified at the location of the settlement. The settlement is part of the Ust-Menza archaeological complex located in the Krasnochikoysky district of the Trans-Baikal Territory, in the mountain-taiga area, at the confluence of the Menza in Chikoy Rivers (the Selenga River basin). In 2016, a new large excavation site was set up on the Ust-Mensa-2 settlement. The top three cultural layers were studied. Of greatest interest is layer 2, which refers to the Early Bronze Age. In the layer, an economic complex is identified, consisting of foci, fireplaces. The stone industry is represented by a large series of micronuclei and micro plates, as well as tools in the form of scrapers, incisors, and piercings. The large items are hammers and bumpers intended for mining and processing of ore. Within the excavation area, 2 Early Bronze Age burials were found in the form of soil pits. In the funeral rite, a red ocher was used and in the funerary inventory there were arrowheads. Anthropological material is practically not preserved. The settlement of Ust-Menza (layer 2) refers to the Khentei culture existed in the mountain-taiga area of south-western Transbaikalia at the dawn of the Bronze Age. |
