Annotation This paper analyses the short stories by Alfred Kheidock, the Russian emigrant writer. His works demonstrate how Russian writers and poets being the first Russians in Harbin emigration adopted Chinese culture, its traditions, customs, mythology and philosophy. Actually, China became their second motherland and they expressed warm gratitude for its hospitality. They admired the Chinese culture, imitated it and borrowed its elements for their literary works. However, being Russian writers and poets they did not forget their home culture. The paper argues that the Chinese culture had become an additional resource for the Russian emigrant writers enriching for them, sometimes even modifying their worldview. This combination of the two cultures helped to maintain contacts between the Russians and Chinese representing different layers of the society, particularly ordinary people. The author uses historical semiotic approach, methods of comparison, abstraction and idealization.
Key words Alfred Kheidock, culture, irrational culture, folk custom, “coming back”, karma
