Annotation This paper presents a brief historical review of studying the Stone Age osteological materials in the world, Russia and the Trans-Baikal region. Since the given issue has not been elaborated yet and there exists only fragmental literature on this subject in the Russian science, the author attempts to generalize the matter. Taking into account the Russian and foreign researchers’ works the evolution of ideas about the fossil fauna has been traced from the primitive interpretations to its recognition as an important source of information about the animal world and its interaction with human society. While characterizing the present state of this field of study the author emphasizes the researchers’ desire to extract as much information as possible from faunal remains that is impossible without interdisciplinary research. The final part of the work is a review of osteo-archeological researches in the Trans-Baikal region. The author offers to compensate for poor preservation and small number of osteological materials in the region by their careful study, the use of modern methods (such as biometric, taphonomical, palaeontological, technological, typological, bio-geographical, trace examination, etc.) as well as the systematization of the Pleistocene fauna sites. These solutions will help in finding new wellpreserved sites and add considerably to the data about the ancient inhabitants of the Trans-Baikal region and their history.
Key words osteological materials, faunal remains, archeo-faunal materials, the history of archeology, the archeological source, the Stone Age Archeology of the Trans-Baikal region.
