Annotation In this paper the author speaks about the importance of the artistic contribution to the development of realism which Russian artists-itinerants made. The realism in the article is considered not as an art method, but as a new world outlook system in the art in the XIX century, reflecting and expressing social, moral, esthetic ideals and values, aspirations and hopes of an entire historical epoch. Among all representatives of itinerant movement the author especially emphasizes I. I. Shishkin being the most outstanding of the progressive academic youth having imbibed ideas of an advanced materialistic esthetics. Shishkin is the unsurpassed master of natural landscape. His original manner, rejecting “dead” academism, was the innovation in the Russian painting of the 19th century. Close peering into nature, nature image which connects aesthetics-hedonistic with “scientific” look of the researchernaturalist – the author considers these accents as constant specific feature in Shishkin’s art. Painting of this ingenious artist, known around the world, are analyzed as philosophy, seeking to show up the nature in its wholeness, catch its arche. The author concludes that it is not simple landscapes, but it is natural philosophy externalized in colouring and painting images. The author uses the biographic method. It allows considering the painter’s life as defining moment of his art and as a interpretation of social processes and phenomena of his time modern reality.
